In that time he&#8217;s made several changes to the powertrain. In the engine bay he swapped the 3.0 L Mercedes OM606 turbodiesel inline-six for a 3.2 L Mercedes <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mercedes-Benz_OM648_engine\">OM648<\/a> turbodiesel inline-six. Sam made the change for more low-end torque. The engine runs on a DID-1 standalone ECU made by Baldur Gislason at <a href=\"https:\/\/controls.is\/shop\/\">Baldur&#8217;s Control Systems<\/a>. He also upgraded the cooling system with an Allisport radiator. When it came to the drivetrain, Sam swapped the Mercedes ML500 five-speed automatic transmission for a BMW ZF 8HP eight-speed automatic transmission using a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/jota5sport\/\">Jota5sport adapter<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.turbolamik.us\/tcu-2-0-turbolamik\/\">TurboLamik standalone transmission controller<\/a>. The Defender retains the LT230 transfer case thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.onlinegearboxparts.com\/product-category\/adaptor-kits\/\">Syncro Gearboxes adapter<\/a> but Sam converted it to air
