GM assembled a team of engine builders and racers headed by Stephen Bothwell to see if they could reach this high power level with many outsiders laughing at the idea of a 700+hp Ecotec engine. Bothwell spent two and a half years racing GM Vortec 4200 six cylinder rally trucks.

The team started testing the engine the old fashioned way, pushing the engine until it blew up then strengthening the destroyed part and then starting the process all over again. They began with a 3 stage nitrous setup for testing up to 375 hp. After that they switched to a turbo setup which would allow them to push to the engine to the final mark of +700 hp.

The most interesting part of the whole article is the last page. There they show very clearly the parts they had to change in order to meet the specific HP rating. Granted a 700+hp ecotec engine would not be very useful to most but the lower hp ratings are. The stock ecotec engine is enough to hold 250 hp. 300hp only saw upgrades on rods, pistons, wrist pins and rings.

Source: Year2032

We were able to run across a document detailing GM’s quest to build a 800 HP Ecotec engine published by Turbo & High-tech Perfomance Magazine in March of 2002..
