Building a BMW E30 with an i3 Electric Motor

BMW E30 with i3 electric motor

DaveG is a self-described BMW nut and restorer. So it shouldn’t surprise anyone that he’s building the World’s first BMW E30 with an electric motor from a BMW i3. The motor makes 168-184 horsepower depending on the year. Dave plans on powering the motor with Fluence battery packs and connecting it to a 320d transmission via a custom adapter plate.

  1. From one BMW classic nut to another I like your idea as I have been having the same thoughts these days. I have 3 BMW 2002’s that I am working on to convert to EV’s and I like the idea of using the I3 motors as it would near double the HP in these very lightweight classics. I am in Colorado at 5000 feet elevation so loss of HP to altitude is important. I am now looking for instructional videos to study the details of an I3 EV conversion.
