VW Type 2 Hot Rod with a Mid-engine V8

VW Type 2 Hot Rod with a Mid-engine ZZ5 V8

When I last wrote about this builder it was on his 1970 Daihatsu Hijet powered by a mid-engine V8. At the bottom of that article you can view all his current and past projects. One of his recent projects is this Volkswagen Type 2 hot rod. The project started with a really rusted out VW Type 2 truck with the only thing usable was the cab. Under that a custom chassis was built out of 2×3 rectangular 3/16″ steel tubing. Behind the cab sits a 400 horsepower ZZ5 V8 crate engine connected to a Hughes Performance Shorty Powerglide transmission. The rear end with 3.73 gears was sourced from a 1999 Ford Explorer.

  1. That thing looks so cool! I wish I had the skills to build a completely custom car. I’m about ready to do an engine swap on my GTi. This has me thinking about making my own spoiler since the one I love is way out of my price range.
