Phillip Glass-Hess aka Wingman703 competes in time attack and hillclimb events with a 1994 Mazda Miata. The car was previously powered by a full built and sleeved turbocharged Honda K24 inline-four. Unfortunately it spun a bearing and sent a rod through the block. Phillip swapped the K24 for a turbocharged 2.5 L VW 07K inline-five. The engine needed a notched oil pan and custom exhaust manifold The motor sits further back in the engine bay thanks to a recessed firewall and modified tunnel. The motor is backed by a Dodge 8HP eight-speed automatic transmission thanks to a custom adapter plate from ChathamCNC. Unfortunately the first 07K motor suffered oil starvation due to the oil pan design. So Phillip pulled another 07K from a junkyard and redesigned the oil pan. At the dyno the motor maxed at 501 hp and 454 lb-ft but Phillip reduced it to a more usable 465 hp and 433 lb-ft for racing.
