This project started with a 2007 Mustang for $6,000. The 5.4 L V8 had only 8,000 miles on it. The original plan was to swap the supercharged V8 into a 1998 Mustang until an upgraded 1997 Mustang Cobra came up for sale. The Cobra originally had a 5.0 L V8 under the hood. The Cobra was purchased for $5,500 because the motor was bad. The Cobra came with a full Maximum Motorsports race suspension. It included tubular K-member, tubular lower control arms, and Bilstein coilovers. It also included an IRS, a MGW shifter to control the T-56 six-speed transmission, upgraded brakes, and a roll cage. The only modifications needed for the engine swap was to the oil filter adapter-alternator bracket and the use of a different alternator. The stock 1997 Cobra ECU was used to control the new engine.

The 97′ Cobra did not come with a 5.0 in it. Those Cobras were last built in 95′. A 97′ would have a 4.6 DOHC engine in it.
Chris you are correct. The 1997 Cobra didn’t come from the factory with a 5.oL. I think the previous owner had swapped the 5.0L in it.
I jus bought a 96 cobra I’m wanna get about 575 HP. Would I need to upgrade my engine to reach that amount? Also , where can I get a 5.4 L like the one you have. I also want to convert to a 6 speed.
How many horses are you pushin’ now with the new engine
How are you man? Nice swap. I am going to be doing the same swap on my 98 cobra later on this year. I already have the engine, cams, and 8 ribbed pulleys. I have a vortech supercharger setup on my 4.6 but am thinking of changing to a kenne bell or whipple. What type of charger is on yours? When you ordered your supercharger, do you just tell them you need a setup for a 5.4L engine or a 98 cobra? It sounds like the swap was pretty straight forward. Anything else you had to change or ran into problems with? Thanks man.
What engine can I put in my 1997 mustang svt cobra with out putting the same thing back in
